What do you do to relax when you have a lazy day at home?
I spend an inordinate amount of time on youtube, watching Netflix or playing video games (poorly) with my kid and our cat. Our favourite shows are Good Mythical Morning, old episodes of Gilmore Girls or zombie movies/TV series. I also like to find creative little projects for myself.
What are you most excited about for 2021? Goals?
I’m really bad at these kinds of questions! I’m very much a “come what may” kind of person. It’s gotten me this far anyway.
What techniques do you/will you most often use in your project?
Earlier on (in my undergrad) I did quite a bit of water sample collection and processing. As of late, I have been focusing on cell culture (protozoan host model & human macrophage) and microscopy. A lot of my time has also been spent with protocol development/optimization because I’ve introduced some new techniques to the lab.
What's one silly mistake you've made in the lab?
I feel like there’s a new one every other day, but if I had to pick one… I forgot to pH 1.5 L of media and had to chuck it out… on more than one occasion.
What are any current problems you are having with your research?
Due to travel restrictions for the field work aspect of my project, I have to be more creative/flexible with the projection of my work but, at least its forcing me to branch out into new things.
What did you hope to get out of grad school in the beginning compared to now?
It still feels early for me, so its hard to say. Actively doing research and working at the bench has definitely solidified my decision, but overall I’m just happy to be here.
