What do you do to relax when you have a lazy day at home?
I eat and like to watch a lot of movies, sometimes I watch a couple of them in one sitting. Then I get tired and go to sleep. I know this sounds unproductive, but that helps me not to think of anything for a while.
What are you most excited about for 2021? Goals?
For 2021, I am excited about graduating soon! But my goals are writing a paper on my thesis, getting admission for a Ph.D. or a job in my field of interest, whichever comes first. Keeping my options open!
What techniques do you/will you most often use in your project?
I spent quite a lot of my thesis time expressing putative efflux pumps. I also extracted mitochondria, mRNA, and DNA. Other works include cloning, PCR, SDS-PAGE, chromatography, EtBr accumulation and efflux assay, drug sensitivity assays etc.
What is one silly mistake you have made in the lab?
While making solid agar media, I autoclaved the media forgetting to put agar in it. And this happened a few times!
What are any current problems you are having with your research?
It is interesting to be able to demonstrate the functions of the proteins without being able to detect them on SDS-PAGE or western blotting. Anyways I will have to make sure that I can see the proteins now, to prove their functions.
What did you hope to get out of grad school in the beginning compared to now?
I wanted to keep my grades high, acquire new skills from the lab, publish papers, and not forget about travelling a lot. If I ask what did I achieve, I would say ‘a lot’. I am really happy with how my thesis has turned out now. I could keep my grades high and received scholarships, lol. I am still a bit far from my main paper, but working on a review. I have been lucky to travel across Canada.
