What do you do to relax when you have a lazy day at home?
I’m a bit of a weirdo when it comes to sleep because I don’t like sleeping in, even on the weekends. I’m usually up pretty early and playing games (PC and Switch). Somewhere along the line I start cooking something spicy and fun, and end the day with a movie and crochet.
What are you most excited about for 2021? Goals?
I’m excited that things are finally starting to work in the lab and that conferences are happening again!
What techniques do you/will you most often use in your project?
My project is based on transposon mutagenesis and Illumina sequencing, so I’ve been doing lots of molecular genetic work. I also use high-throughput colony screening with a colony picking robot.
What's one silly mistake you've made in the lab?
I was making a bunch of agar medium for some cloning experiments but I forgot to add the agar. I only noticed when I was halfway into pouring a tower of plates that the medium was really sloshy.
What are any current problems you are having with your research?
I’ve hit a bit of a bottleneck in our bioinformatics pipeline that needs some custom work. Now I’ve learned to value the work of our collaborating computer scientists!
What did you hope to get out of grad school in the beginning compared to now?
My undergrad was in biochem and coming here I had very little micro knowledge. When I started grad school, I was looking for training in modern high-throughput techniques and Illumina sequencing in a microbiology setting. Now, I’m looking to network and create connections to help me in my next placement… wherever and whatever that may be!
